Coach Leila Lockett

Leila is no stranger to the Edgewood community; she has been teaching in Edgewood ISD for 38 years. She pursued higher education at Texas Tech University and began her teaching career at Edgewood Junior High School in 1981. Leila says her reason for teaching is the ability to bring more opportunities of success to students. "Prior to Title IX, I didn't get to participate in athletics, so I wanted to give young women an opportunity via sports to be more productive citizens in the world. It was a venue for them to be more socially and emotionally involved." In her many years of teaching in Edgewood ISD, one thing she enjoys the most is seeing growth in her students. "It's the validation of seeing all the boys and girls turn into young men and women. They go on to become parents and now I'm teaching second or third generations. That's a plus," Leila said. After being nominated in 1987 for Teacher of the Year, she didn't expect to be nominated a second time. "I was surprised, I didn't expect any of this. To be validated by a lot of young teachers and other teachers on campus is rewarding. It's rewarding to know that you are appreciated for the things that you are doing."

join us in congratulating Leila on her nomination for 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year at Wrenn Middle School!
